Askeran
Region
in today's Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, approximately corresponding to
the ancient Khachen and Varanda principalities of Artsakh.
Mairaberd (Mother Forteress), built in 1788 south of Askeran, 14 km from Stepanakert, was an important stronghold of Artsakh.
