Echmiadzin
(Armenian
for: Descending of the Only Begotten), formerly Vagharshapat
(Nor Kagak, New City), ancient capital of Armenia, situated 9m (15km)
west of Yerevan. Founded in the 2d century, Echmiadzin is the official
center of the Armenian Church and the residence of Catholicos. The main
cathedral was built in 303 by Gregory the Illuminator.
