New Julfa

Armenian quarter of Esfahan, in Iran. Esfahan was the ancient capital of the Persian Shah Abbas I (1587-1629). He encouraged commerce, granting privileges to the merchants and all kind of skillful workmen. He displaced here a large number of Armenians, who later formed an important and prosperous colony.
