Stepanakert

Capital city of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. In the late 18th century what is now Stepanakert were a number of small Armenian villages, such as Baghin Shen, Vararagn etc. Afterwards, the Khan of Shushi captured these villages and renamed them Khankendi (Village of Khan). In 1923, Khankendi was renamed Stepanakert in honor of Stephan Shaumian, leader of Caucasian Bolsheviks.
